History and Growth of CARDS 

Initially, the Department of Computing was part of Tapia College of Business at Saint Leo University, offering one undergraduate degree program in computer information systems. Dr. Krishnan shared, "Due to the growing interest in cybersecurity, we decided to introduce additional programs like a cybersecurity degree and a bachelor's degree in computer science with a focus on cybersecurity." He played a pivotal role in establishing the computer science and cybersecurity degree programs at the university. 

Over the years, the department has experienced significant growth, adding more faculty members, degree programs, and increasing enrollment. Dr. Krishnan explained, "The department expanded to the extent that by 2021, there were enough students and degree programs to branch off as a separate College of Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Data Science (CARDS)." The college has been recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security as a center of excellence in Cyber Defense Education, highlighting its commitment to providing quality education in the field of technology. 

Degree Programs and Curriculum 

CARDS offers a comprehensive range of degree programs, including minors, associate, bachelor, and master's degrees in various fields of computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, and data science. Among these programs is the innovative 3+1 accelerated program, where students can complete a bachelor's and master's degree in just four years. This unique offering allows students to fast-track their education and enter the workforce with advanced qualifications, giving them a competitive edge in the job market. 

 With a strong focus on cybersecurity, the college collaborates with industry partners like the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council and Pasco Economic Development Council to keep degree programs and curriculum updated. Dr. Krishnan emphasized, "The curriculum is designed to meet the emerging needs of the industry, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the workforce." 

Research Opportunities and Innovation 

Dr. Krishnan highlighted the importance of research and innovation in the interview. He said, "At CARDS, we encourage students to participate in research projects and collaborate with faculty members on innovative ideas." The college provides opportunities for students to work on real-world projects, develop new technologies, and contribute to the advancement of the field. This hands-on experience not only enhances students' learning but also prepares them for successful careers in the ever-evolving world of technology. 

Supportive Environment and Personalized Education 

Saint Leo University prides itself on having small class sizes that allow for more personalized interaction between students and full-time faculty members. Dr. Krishnan shared, "The college offers a welcoming and supportive environment for both faculty and students, emphasizing the personal and transformative aspects of education." Dr. Krishnan discussed the importance of industry collaborations and community outreach in the interview. He said, "CARDS engages with the community and local industries to create opportunities for students, such as providing resources for small businesses looking to establish a web presence." The college collaborates with local industries to offer internship and job placement opportunities for students. Dr. Krishnan also mentioned their outreach efforts, such as hosting events like "capture the flag," a hackathon where teams of students from local universities compete in cybersecurity challenges with cash prizes sponsored by industry partners.
