For students passionate about making a difference in their communities, social work offers a path to meaningful and impactful careers. Saint Leo University’s Social Work Program stands out not only for its comprehensive curriculum but also for its hands-on approach to real-world experiences. Dr. Ebony Perez, Chair of the Undergraduate Social Work Program, shares insights into what makes the program unique and why Saint Leo is an excellent choice for aspiring social workers.

A Comprehensive Social Work Education

Saint Leo University’s Social Work Program is designed to prepare students for a broad range of careers in the field. Unlike common misconceptions that social workers primarily work in child welfare or education, the program emphasizes the diversity of social work careers. From direct services such as case management and counselling to community advocacy and policy influence, social work professionals play a vital role in shaping society.

“Social workers are the hands-on, boots-on-the-ground professionals,” says Dr. Perez. “We work with individuals, families, communities, and even at the societal level to promote well-being.” The program introduces students to various specializations, including medical social work, school social work, and community development, allowing them to find their niche within the profession.

Hands-On Experience: Preparing for the Real World

One of the key aspects that set Saint Leo’s program apart is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students must complete a minimum of 400 internship hours, ensuring they gain real-world experience before graduating. The internship placement process begins a year before students are placed, allowing them to explore different career paths and populations of interest. With over 70 placements available in the Tampa Bay area, students are supported in finding opportunities that align with their professional goals.

“Many of our students receive job offers from their internship placements,” Dr. Perez notes. “Around 60% of our students secure positions before they even graduate.” The university facilitates this process by hosting information sessions where students can select three potential placements, with faculty securing the final placement for them.

To further support students during their fieldwork, they take a Senior Seminar alongside their internship. This course serves as a space to reflect on their experiences, receive feedback, and navigate challenges they encounter in the field.

Innovative Curriculum and Skill Development

Saint Leo integrates practical skills early in the program to ensure students are prepared for academic and professional success. One of the foundational courses, Documentation & Technology, teaches students how to conduct research, exceed the academic writing standard, and build the skills necessary for future grant writing. Throughout the program, students work on developing a fictional client case file, allowing them to practice case management and receive peer feedback.

Additionally, the program embraces technological advancements by teaching students how to use AI ethically. “We incorporate AI into assignments, ensuring that students learn how to engage with it practically and ethically,” Dr. Perez explains. This forward-thinking approach equips graduates with modern tools they’ll use in the field.

Faculty Support and Professional Guidance

Saint Leo’s Social Work faculty serve as both professors and advisors, bringing their extensive professional experience into the classroom. Many adjunct professors are practicing social workers, ensuring that course material remains relevant to current industry trends.

“The faculty’s experience in the field allows us to adapt assignments and activities to reflect what’s happening in the profession,” Dr. Perez says. This adaptability ensures students receive up-to-date knowledge and practical insights.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to join the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) after earning their bachelor's degree, providing them with networking opportunities and professional development resources.

Pathway to a Master’s Degree in One Year

For students looking to further their education, Saint Leo offers a  Master’s in Social Work preparing graduates for professional advanced practice in social work services that promote social justice, economic justice, and human rights on local, national, and global levels. Earning a bachelor’s degree in social work leads to the opportunity to complete your master’s degree in as little as one year.

“Time and money saved is a huge benefit,” Dr. Perez points out. “For those who follow the program’s trajectory, we can essentially plan out their next 3-5 years for them.”

Incorporating Saint Leo’s Core Values

Saint Leo University’s Social Work Program seamlessly incorporates the university’s core values, particularly community and responsible stewardship. The program instils a commitment to service, ensuring students understand their role in advocating for the underserved and being a voice for the voiceless.

“Our students learn that social work is about promoting well-being in the community,” Dr. Perez explains. “It’s about embracing diversity, innovation, and finding new strategies to help those in need.”

Advice for Prospective Students

For those considering a career in social work, Dr. Perez emphasizes self-reflection: What kind of help do you want to provide? Many students enter the field because they’ve either received help during a challenging time or have seen someone close to them struggle without proper support. Social work offers a fulfilling career path for those passionate about making a tangible impact on individuals and communities.

“Social work is a profession that values every person,” Dr. Perez concludes. “If you want a career where you can truly empower others and drive positive change, this is the field for you.”
