Television Commentator Tucker Carlson Kicks Off Fifth Annual International Business Conference

February 20, 2014

Noted conservative journalist and political commentator Tucker Carlson delivered an energetic keynote address Wednesday evening, February 19, to begin Saint Leo University’s Fifth Annual International Business Conference.

Carlson, co-host of Fox and Friends Weekend and a former co-host of CNN’s Crossfire, kept an audience of more than 150 engaged with his sharp wit and keen intellect. He commented on a range of economic, political and social issues, and along with some light-hearted remarks, pinpointed some issues he considers to be most serious for American democracy.

“All progress is incremental,” said Carlson. “We are in a perilous place politically, economically, and socially. Everyone wants things to improve. We need peers debating peers in a civil way by comparing arguments in opposition of each other’s view. Moving towards greater inequality will not help accomplish that goal and more divisiveness will occur. We need to be invested – to have ‘skin in the game,’ ” Carlson stated.

The conference, organized by the Donald R. Tapia School of Business at Saint Leo University, continues on Thursday and Friday, February 20 and 21, at University Campus. The theme is “Innovation and Internationalization.” Some sessions and panels are geared to academic audiences and business researchers, while others draw on the experience of professionals and executives in the business world.

Thursday morning’s opening plenary speaker featured David Harmon, deputy director and chief human capital officer of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board of Governors, with his presentation, “Innovation in the ‘New’ Human Resources.”

Thursday evening features “Carnival de las Americas,” an Intercultural Student Association Regional Spotlight Reception, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the School of Business building atrium and loggia.

The closing session speaker is U.S. Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor), who is scheduled from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m. Friday in the Student Community Center Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms.

The entire schedule is available at the conference registration page at

Saint Leo is located at 33701 State Road 52 in the east Pasco County town of Saint Leo, four miles east of Interstate 75 (Exit 285). Parking is readily available in the campus garage.
