Soccer Wrap-Up, SSC Champs
November 17, 2011
Congratulations are due to the Lions
women’s soccer team for an extraordinary 2011 season that included
a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) regular season championship
title, along with an NCAA Tournament appearance. The team’s run
ended November 13, with an NCAA South Region Tournament loss (2-1)
to Lynn University’s Fighting Knights.
The Lions earned 15 wins during the season, and Head Coach Ged O’Connor was named SSC Coach of the Year. Additionally, six student-athletes were named to the Sunshine State Conference All-Women’s Soccer Team.
“The women’s team had a tremendous run, and credit must go to Coach O’Connor, Coach (Annie) Hamel and Certified Athletic Trainer Crystal Evans for being able to win the conference championship despite numerous injuries,” said Saint Leo University Director of Athletics Fran Reidy.
“Unfortunately, while the players were able to find a way during
the regular season––not having the 2010 Player-of-the-Year in Pia
Soesemann on the field, and having several other starters barely
able to practice––the injuries ultimately came into play in the
post-season,” he said. But that does not diminish his satisfaction
in the effort and excitement displayed. “I am extremely proud of
the players, and pleased with the student body, which supported the
team so well throughout the season,” he concluded. For complete
