One of Nation's Rising Business Stars Joins Board of Trustees

Saint Leo University President Dr. Arthur F. Kirk, Jr., and the Saint Leo University Board of Trustees recently announced that Shelley Broader, president and chief operating officer of Sweetbay Supermarket/ Kash n’Karry 'Supermarkets, has joined the Board of Trustees. Broader will be serving a three-year term beginning July 1, 2005. "Shelley Broader brings many gifts to our Board,' stated Dr. Kirk. "She is a brilliant strategic thinker with a great understanding of our competitive challenges and opportunities. Shelly also brings a great enthusiasm for students and appreciation for the mission of small Catholic universities.'

Broader joined Kash n’Karry as president and chief operating officer in June of 2003, coming to Florida after 12 years of experience as senior vice president for the northeast grocery chain, Hannaford Brothers Co. Both Kash n’ Karry and Hannaford Brothers are subsidiaries of Delhaize-America that has food operations in 10 countries on three continents. Broader, a native of Spokane, Wash., attended Washington State University.

Recently Broader announced changes to the Kash n’ Karry line, including the creation and roll-out of a new supermarket concept in Florida called Sweetbay Supermarket. The new stores have been designed especially for the Florida market providing Floridians with a vibrant and diverse place for their shopping needs. Broader is leading the new store development, and her vision for Sweetbay Supermarket is based on studies into Florida shoppers' quest for more than just quality and variety. There are currently nine Sweetbay Supermarkets with more in the planning stages.

The Tampa Tribune named Broader as one of Tampa Bay’s "25 People to Watch' in a January 2003 issue for her efforts in sheparding Kash n’ Karry through its four-year transition into Sweetbay Supermarkets. In 2004, the Tampa Bay Business Journal named her as one of the "Top 10 People to Watch.' Broader is featured in Debra Peshuk’s 2001 book, "Playing with the Big Boys: Success Secrets of the Most Powerful Women in Business.'
