Mass at 3 p.m. Friday Precedes Commencement Ceremonies
April 23, 2013
A Baccalaureate Mass will be said at 3 p.m., Friday, April 26, in the Marion Bowman Activities Center in celebration of the weekend’s upcoming commencement ceremonies at University Campus. It is a time of prayer and thanksgiving for graduates, families, faculty, staff, and university administrators and supporters—of all faiths.
The presider of the Baccalaureate Mass will be Most Reverend Felipe J. Estévez, bishop of the diocese of St. Augustine. During the Mass, he will receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Saint Leo University in recognition of his service to the church and support of education.
The bishop was installed two years ago as the spiritual leader of a diocese of some 182,000 Catholics who live in 17 Florida counties, from Florida counties from Nassau County in the north to Flagler County in the south, and westward to the Gulf of Mexico. This diocese includes many counties where Saint Leo students are enrolled in Education Centers. Bishop Estévez, who came to America from Cuba as a teenager, has served the church in ministries for youth, college students, prisons, families, and more. He holds a doctorate in theology and is fluent in English, Spanish, French, and Italian.
Concelebrants of the Mass will be Right Reverend Isaac Camacho. O.S.B. ’95, abbot of Saint Leo Abbey; Reverend Monsignor Robert F. Morris ’79, vicar general of the Diocese of St. Petersburg and Saint Leo University trustee; and faculty members Reverend Anthony Kissel, Ph.D., and Reverend Michael W. Cooper, S.J., S.T.D..
Father Stephan Brown, S.V.D., assistant to the President for University Ministry, is the master of ceremonies.
