Dr. Balbir S. Bal is dean of the Donald R. Tapia School of
Business and a tenured professor of computer science at Saint Leo
University. He holds a bachelor’s in chemistry from Punjab
Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India; a master’s in
biochemical engineering from the University of Wales, Swansea,
U.K.; and a doctorate in computer science from the University of
Aston, Birmingham, U.K.
Dr. Bal joined the faculty in 1999 after teaching in higher
education in England for 22 years. In 2006, he was appointed
department chair of Computer Information Systems (CIS) and
Accounting (now, Department of Computer Science & Information
Systems) overseeing the development of information system and
security offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In
2009 he was promoted to associate dean, where he led the effort to
strengthen the core business curriculum, secure accreditation for
business programs, and lay the groundwork for the new flagship
program in computer science. In July 2015, he was named dean of the
Tapia School of Business.
Dr. Bal has co-authored a textbook in CIS, contributed a chapter
in another textbook, published a number of papers and made numerous
presentations at national and international conferences. A highly
respected scholar and educator, his areas of research expertise are
information systems, decision modeling, and robot programming.
He and his wife of 40 years, Jaspal, have two children – a son,
Andeep, and a daughter, Rubinder – and currently reside in Dade
